Star Party @ PSTCC

The Smoky Mountain Astronomical Society is sponsoring a star party for students and visitors at Pellissippi State Technical Community College (Hardin Valley, main campus) the evening of Thursday April 22, 2010.

This is a Thursday evening event starting at 8:00 PM and lasting until 10:00 PM. Even from the light-polluted skies of Knoxville, SMAS members hope to show you interesting features of the Moon and the gas giant planet Saturn with its beautiful rings. If the weather cooperates perhaps we can even see the cradle of star formation in the Great Nebula of Orion. Observation will take place in parking lot 08. We hope to have parking lot 08 blocked off for observing. Please park in the neighboring lots numbers 07 and 09. We ask you to approach and leave from these lots so as to minimize headlights pointed at parking lot 08.

Members of SMAS will demonstrate several different types of telescopes. There will be small telescopes which are good for portable operation. There will be larger telescopes, which require more effort to transport, but are more capable too.

To make this is a rain or shine event SMAS has also reserved a room in the Alexander Building: Room 150. In the event of bad weather, we will endeavor to setup some telescopes indoors and provide videos and/or 3D slideshows of astronomical interest.
